These are sharply demarcated yellowish deposit of fat underneath the skin, usually on or around the eyelids.

While they are neither harmful nor painful, these minor growths may be disfiguring and can be removed. They are common in people of Asian origin and those from the Mediterranean region.

In about 50% of patients lipid levels are normal although in young individuals with this condition there is a higher incidence of high cholesterolaemia.

Treatment options include laser therapy, electrodessication followed by curettage, cautious application of trichloracetic acid using a cotton wool bud and excision (rarely performed). There is about 40% risk of recurrence after treatment. Lipid lowering medication or diet changes have a limited effect on these lesions.

At Vitality medical spa we generally treat this with TCA peels.

Lipid levels should be checked in all patients presenting with xanthelasma and we will liaise with your GP with your consent for this.

Stop the use of topical retinoids for one week before the peel.

No laser hair removal for three weeks prior to the peel.

No exfoliation of the skin for about three weeks prior to peel.

Use the products for pre- prepping the skin if advised by the consulting practitioner.

Apply sunscreen daily as advised.

Post peel advice:

Use sunscreen minimum SPF 30 for several weeks.

No exfoliation for two weeks after the peel.

No make up should be worn for 5-7 days after the peel to allow the skin to peel.

No picking of the skin.

It should be kept well moisturised.

No laser hair removal for at least three weeks post peel.
